Dog Training Methods

The most effective dog training methods apply the natural instincts of a canine towards positive social behavior. Dogs are known for their innate sociability and adaptability, and it is these two qualities that make dogs wonderful pets. Dogs naturally want to be accepted as part of a pack.

Your home is the environment into which your dog must become acclimated, and your family will become his pack. In nature, dogs learn the rules of their pack by trying things out and assessing the rewards and consequences of their behavior. They do the same thing with their human families. When a dog knows the only rewarding behavior is to obey and defer to all family members, that is exactly what he will do. This is why nearly all effective Dog Training Methods involve commands followed by treats and other rewards.

Dog Training Methods Instill Good Habits in Your Dog
All dog training methods require consistency and persistence on the part of the owner. A dog will not be conditioned to obey in one day. He must realize that obedience must be a way of life for him, and that he will be a happy and loved family member for following commands. He learns this whenever you feed, pet, or give him a toy after obeying. This is why it is so important to avoid spoiling your dog when he's done nothing to deserve it. A spoiled dog learns that he can obtain what he wants through begging, barking, and jumping on the dining room table to raid Thanksgiving dinner!

Keep in mind that a puppy has no idea what constitutes good behavior. He has to figure that out as he grows, and it's your job to point him in the right direction. Be patient while you're training your dog, and always remember that obedience training is well worth the time and effort in the long run.
