House Training Dogs

Nearly all dogs, regardless of heredity, can be trained to become great pets. One of the most important things to remember when you own a dog is that there can be no question as to who the leader of the pack is: you. Too many pet owners, however, believe dominance must be achieved through physical or psychological intimidation. This method is not only cruel but also counterproductive.

Like employees who are mistreated by their bosses, dogs can become resentful of mean masters and eventually plot to overthrow them as pack leaders. At the very least, they become aloof and protective of toys, bones, and other things. At worst, they turn to aggression, the same form of discipline used on them.

The best dog training techniques teach even dominant and territorial dogs to love and defer to their owners, who are also their best friends. Masters must care for their dogs yet remain very firm about the rules. Dogs should know they will be rewarded for following the master's lead.

House Training Dogs through Canine Gestures
It is also important to notice the small gestures a dog makes when trying to establish dominance. The alpha dog in a pack eats first, walks through entrances first, and does not budge for any other dog. Disallow your dog to take on these roles and accept them yourself. If your dog lies in the hallway, make him move rather than walking around him. Feed your dog last of everyone in the family. These subtle tactics are peaceful and harmless ways to house train your dog and teach him his role in the pack.
